Back from Bunker Bay!
21 . September . 08
I had a awesome time down at Bunker Bay at the Fuji Breakaway Seminar - all the speakers were so interesting and inspiring, and learnt many new things! The best bit about heading down to Bunker Bay each year, despite the fact we get to stay in five star accommodation for a few days, is meeting and hanging out with all the other photographers in Perth.
Arlene and I headed down to the beach at the end of the first day to get some fresh air and have a play with our cameras.

Out of Office: 15th September - 21st September
15 . September . 08
I am going to be out of the office for the next week - will be back in on Monday 22nd September. I am heading down to Bunker Bay for the annual AIPP Fuji Breakaway seminar. A bunch of photographers hanging out at a 5 star resort for a few days! Awesome speakers coming over this year, including Stephen Dupont and Yervant!
Last year I did not have any phone reception while I was at Bunker Bay, so my guess is that it will be the same this year. If you need to get in contact with me, please email me, if the matter is urgent I will email you back as soon as possible, otherwise all email / phone messages will be replied on my return! :)
so this post is not completely dull, here is some photos I took in San Francisco last month.

Annoucement: Photo Booth Hire in Perth!
11 . September . 08
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for photobooths. Though who doesnt right? :) Over the past year I have been setting up makeshift photobooths at weddings in order to bring some photo booth love into more peoples lives :) In the meantime I have been searching the world high and low trying to find an old style retro photobooth, after much research, we have finally found us a booth! I would have absolutely loved to buy an old style booth, but the practicalities of lugging around chemicals and all that mess, did not seem like the best route to go, so we have the best of both worlds…. 20th century meeting the 21st! It is a digital booth living in vintage style housing!
The booth prints double-print photo strips, the idea being, to tear and share! The host gets to keep one and the guests get to keep the other - this has got to beat sugared almonds any day! A perfect substitute for the bombonerie/favors at weddings.. and a whole lot of fun too! :)
We have just launched the website and we have some opening specials! I want to give all my clients first dibbs on the dates as I know this booth is going to book up quickly! The requests we have had in the lead up to the launch as been amazing! Head over to www.pushthebuttonphotobooths.com.au for more info!
San Francisco - Day 6
9 . August . 08

Today has been an amazing day. A day that I never thought would happen. Today, I had the honor of photographing alongside Jose Villa at his 08-08-08 wedding. Jose was named in the Top 10 Wedding Photographers in the world this year! It has been a completely amazing experience, it was great to see how Jose creates his art. His work is truly beautiful. Thank you Jose for the kindness you have shown me, you do not know how much this means to me :) The two above are a few favorites I took today. More coming later :)
San Francisco - Day Five
8 . August . 08

Today was the last day of the workshop, after three days of intense emotional learning, I can say I am so truly thankful for coming on this journey to the USA. I know the people I have meet in this workshop, will be apart of my future journeys in life and our paths will definitely cross again, multiple times. A bunch of strangers at the beginning of the week, it’s amazing that through our love for photography, it is possible for us all to connect so quickly and in such a unique way. Photography is so much more than just a click of a button. This is something I will be exploring on many deeper levels on the coming days, weeks, months and years.
Tomorrow something truly amazing is happening. I am doing something I never thought would ever be possible. More on this after tomorrow has been :)
The journey of being.
6 . August . 08
Today I feel more alive then I have in a very long time. The last time I really remember this feeling was about two years ago. I was in the middle of the Rajasthan desert in India, our car had broken down and as I stood on the side of the road, with wind blowing through my hair and sand in my eyes, I remember feeling the way I do today. Today I came to understand the fascination I have with wind blowing in peoples hair in my work, it takes me back to the last time I felt alive.
.. The last 24 hours has been a complete life changing experience. I cannot even begin to describe the journey I have just began but I know my life is going to be dramatically different from here on.
Today I started the Life (as an artform) workshop in San Francisco. I have traveled to the other side of the world to be part of this, all on my own, not knowing a single soul here. Last night, I laid wide awake in my hotel room bed at 4am completely jet lagged but completely excited about the workshop starting in the morning, I could not sleep as much as I tried to, I sat in bed scrawling down the millions of thoughts going through my mind. I started writing down ideas about my journey of being, I had actually called it something different, but as Jesh began discussing that ‘life’ is the journey of ‘being’, I knew instantly when he begin discussing this, that last night I was just beginning to scratch the surface of something truly life changing.
San Francisco - Day Two
5 . August . 08

Woke up very late today, 11:00am, eeek! Although I am just probably getting over the jetlag, its weird because I am normally a early riser. I have been sleeping with the curtains wide open, its pretty awesome to wake up to a view like that each morning. Well since it was a late start to the day, and the workshop dinner is tonight and my legs are hurting a lot from yesterday, so I caught the trolley tram thing into Chinatown, and decided to head back downtown to the shopping area for a few hours this afternoon. Only bought a new pair of sunnies from Urban Outfitters. I was so excited to be able to go back into Urban Outfitters since they were my favorites when I was living in London, though nothing today took may fancy! I did find one really cool top but didnt have my size. One thing I must say is that I do love the American sizes. Size 10 in Australia is a size 8 here. Yes I do like that a lot. haha.
Another thing I must mention, is although Australia and the United States are very similar in so many ways, the food is really different. I went to a food court today and everything was so strangely different which I didnt expect it to be? The Japanese was different, so was the Mexican and the Chinese. I am having sushi withdrawals - I cant seem to find chicken sushi anywhere? Does it not exist here?
45 minutes until I am meeting up with Jesh and the workshop gang for dinner! Eee! :)
San Francisco - Day One
4 . August . 08
Today was spent walking around San Francisco, I worked out I must have walked at least 15kms (9.3 miles) today - my feet hurt like hell at the end of it, especially because I was wearing my havaianas. So one of the first touristy things I checked out was the “Crookedest Street” Lombard Street - the zigzag street featured in movies all the time. I then headed down to the Fishermans Wharf to check out the Submarine (a close family friend was rescued in WWII by this submarine), though Im going back later in the week to have a proper look. While down at the wharf I found a old photobooth! Something I was hoping to find on my journey in the USA :)
Later I checked out some shops at Union Square, wondered through Chinatown, got lunch at a sweet little Italian bakery in North Beach and then slowly wondered back to the hotel, thinking it would have been about 5pm, finding out it was 7:30pm when I got back to the hotel - forgot about daylight savings!
Not sure what tomorrow will have in store, might check out Alamo Square (the houses featured in the Full House intro), Haight Ashbury and the Golden Gate Bridge. Im going to hire a bike at the end of the week so I can ride over the Golden Gate bridge :)

Im off!
1 . August . 08

After months of thinking about this, I am finally getting on a plane to San Francisco to be part of Life (as an artform) photography workshop by Jesh de Rox with Jose Villa as guest speaker. I absolutely adore both these guys work, I have been wanting to go to this workshop for a long time but could never go because my calendar is always jammed packed. A few months ago, Jesh announced the San Francisco workshop for August, and as soon as I saw it I knew I was going. So here I am (bags still not packed I might add), but soon be in the air flying to the USA. As luck would have it, David Jay and Jasmine Star, are going to be in San Francisco while I am there as part of their Free to Succeed tour around the states, so I am booked in for that too!
So to all my clients, I am now out of the office until the 25th August. The best way to contact me while I am away is by email - mail at sammblake dot com or using the contact form on my websites, or leaving a comment on the blog! If it’s absolutely urgent, please text message (+61412848820) and I will call you when I can. I will be checking my email daily so that is the best way to get in contact with me.
Thanks to all who sent me birthday wishes yesterday and feedback for my new websites, you guys totally made my day! :)
I will be blogging my adventures while I am away so check back here in the next few days! :)

It’s Ready!
31 . July . 08
In honour of my birthday (today I turn 25!) I am launching my new websites!! Brand spanking new wedding and portrait websites! Head over to www.sammblake.com to check them out!
If you have any hiccups using the site please leave me a comment! I LOVE feedback :)
Decided against the background music route, I was told I would have to contact each record label to get permission and pay fees, decided it probably was not worth it because most people look at websites while they are at work!
Not long now until I jetset off to San Francisco! Getting my haircut this morning, dentist this afternoon, dinner with Micki tonight, wash all my clothes, pack, finish off some jobs for clients, email (oh I am so behind on email, I have a six hour stopover in Singapore - I intend on replying to everyone then!)
New website … coming soon!
25 . July . 08
One of the exciting projects I have been working hard on over the past few weeks is that I am launching a new wedding website + portrait website. I was over the old layouts, they have treated me well but decided it was time to create something new. I am in the very final stages of the wedding website to be ready, all I really have to do is finalize the music. Ive decided to pay to have licensed music on my wedding site because the three songs I have chosen suit the photos really well and just makes the whole viewing experience so powerful. It’s going to be SWEET. I just have to find out about one more copyright fee I have to pay, fingers crossed it will not cost to much! If any Aussies know exactly how much it will cost please fill me in because I do not want to wait until Monday to find out.
Hopefully it will be live by Tuesday or Wednesday!
Rainy Friday
18 . July . 08
Some BIG projects are in the works! I have not posted in the last few days because I have been working on some very exciting new projects! Im currently working on setting up a new side business with my partner, we will be launching in Spring but hopefully have a website up in the next couple of weeks. All my existing clients will be the first to know :)
I’m off to San Francisco in two weeks time! I am heading over to do a photography workshop with Jesh de Rox and Jose Villa. I really connect with these guys work. Everyone who has been to Jesh’s workshop has said it has changed their life completely. I am started to get really excited to go!!! eee!! :)
I am a big fan of letterpress, does anybody know of any good stores in San Fran were I can buy me some letterpress prettiness? or any awesome paper stores? or anything you think I may enjoy seeing/buying while I am in San Francisco?
Yesterday I received my iPhone. I am such a gadget freak :) It is completely worth getting, everything about it is awesome and all the apps are really cool. So if you have been thinking about getting the iphone, stop thinking and just get it :) Did you know you can drink a virtual beer from it? :) The thing I like best about the iphone is that it is going to get my life organized. My laptop is my constant companion because I always need to be able to check my email, now my iPhone can do that for me and as I have so many appointments each week, being able to sync my calendar is absolutely awesome (my nokia n95 was capable of this but not very well). I am really looking forward to MobileMe launching.
I will hopefully have one of my projects ready to launch next week. I have been working hard on it all week and cannot wait until everyone can see!
Happy Friday everyone :)

101 List
18 . June . 08

10 days of blogging! Ive decided to carry on for a month so I tick off #2 in my 101 list. Have you ever wondered what my 101 is all about at the top of this blog? Well its 101 things I want to achieve in 1001 days. Some of the things are a bit unachievable in 1001 days (like having 3 kids! I do not even plan on having one by then), so its more of a long term list to keep me inspired and remind me of my goals. This year has been a little slow on being able to tick off items, only two, though two very good ones! To win an award and to be debt free! Those items were in my top ten so not too bad.
Some items from the list I am trying to check off:
#2 To update my blog everyday for a month : Only 20 days to go!
#5 Buy my own house and then spend time making it into exactly what I want: February 2009 is hopefully the month!
#7 Make a photo book of my travel photography: This is one of my winter projects.
9# Get a dog : this goes along with #5
11# To travel to Japan again : I am planning on going to Japan sometime next year. I went there when I was 12 on a student exchange. I cant wait to go back.
44# To travel to another country by myself : 6 weeks until I leave for the USA!! yippie!
46# To take my parents out for dinner at a really nice restaurant : I shouted my whole family dinner after we finishing up at the bridal fair in March. My parents and sisters helped me so much so it was a little thank you. Though Mum and Dad I plan on taking you to a nicer place soon :)
61# To live my life caffeine free : Okay this is the big one! If you know me well, you know I love my coke zero. This is officially my first day… im going through serious withdrawals. I am sleepy and have no energy. If you see me with a coke zero in the future, please tell me off :)
63# To travel to the USA for WPPI : Im going in February 2009!
77# To inspire someone to become a photographer : Someone emailed me a few months ago telling me I can check this off :)
86# Befriend an enemy : I dont really have enemies but a crazy neighbor and I are now friendly again!
101# Become a vegan : From about September 2007 until March 2008 I became vegetarian. I tried to become a vegan but my work lifestyle even made being a vegetarian too hard. Something I want to try again in the future.
Books
17 . June . 08
I’ve been reading a lot lately, almost a book a week, all business related, mostly finance, marketing and investing. I am indeed learning a lot! :) I am looking at buying a house in the next 6 months and so trying to learn as much as I can, as fast as I can. I wake up every morning at about 6am and read for about an hour or so, its amazing how much energy I have these days! I generally like my sleep, but not so much at the moment, I prefer to read.
Last week I finished reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. This book was great to read and very insightful, I highly recommend it!
I am currently reading Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi I am almost finished (this book is also highly recommended) and wondering what book should I read next? any recommendations?
Freaky Friday
14 . June . 08
Last night I had a fabulous time at Kirstens Freaky Friday birthday party down in Albany (still down here until Sunday night). Mick went as the Hulk and I decided to go as Shrek and coated my face in green eye shadow! Heres a few photos of the festivities:
Michael and I. A match made in heaven - the hulk and shrek! haha

Arlene and myself. I think Arls went as a goth.

Kirsten and Backwards Man aka Chris:

Myself and Michael - it looks like I am about to spill my drink all over him! I think it was empty though!

Receiving a kiss from the birthday girl!

I’ve been tagged!

Eiffel Tower - Paris
9 . June . 08

Third day of blogging! Thought I would post a travel picture that I have never posted! This photo was taken looking down from the Eiffel Tower in Paris while I was there in December 2006. This is the one and only photo I have while up the Eiffel Tower, my batteries in my Mamiya 6 died after this shot was taken, and my spare batteries were all the way back in London! My medium format camera takes a rare type of battery, so I didnt even bother trying to find any at the stores in Paris. Of all the places for my batteries to die! I am glad that this is the only shot I have though, I like how the people are arching around in the queue. Why would you bother waiting in line to catch the lift up? This was about 9am on a very very very cold winters morning, we took the stairs to try to get some warmth!
Photos from Brisbane
7 . June . 08
Finally back from Brisbane and back into the swing of things. It was great going over to PMA, my head is about to explode with all the ideas I want to implement into my business. It was great hearing everyone speak at the imaging conference on Sunday, lots of advice I will be taking on board. We finally got some good weather on Tuesday and so we walked around Brisbane for most of the day. The first two shots were taken in the Botanical Gardens. I only took my 45mm Tilt Shift lens out with me, it was great to just shot with this lens, manual focus and manual exposure, it definitely slows me down a lot, which is a very good thing indeed!

Sarah chilling out on some stairs in the gardens.

Sarah wanting to return the favor and took some photos of me. I hate having my photo taken! I look impressed don’t I?

We found this cool little cool cafe called Batavia on the South Bank, its basically a tea house, you order which blend of tea you would like and you get your own little tea party on your table. I had Chinese Gunpowder mixed with Emerald Sunrise. Its the best green tea I have had, so good in fact I am drinking some this very minute!

Myself and Sarah at the APPA awards night, taken in the ladies loo’s!

Lots of blog posts coming over the next week. Finally have the time to catch up on all the weddings, portrait shots and many other things I have not had time to blog! Stay tuned!

24 . March . 08
happy easter everyone!
I hope everyone has had a fantastic break! I shot two fabulous weddings on Saturday and Sunday and today I had the pleasure of having a day off so Micki and I jumped in the car and went on a road trip up to York. I never seem to get around to taking images for myself anymore, so today I bought my camera along and had a bit more of a play around with my 45mm tilt shift lens.

and this is one micki took of me as we hanged out along the river bank.

I WON!!!
7 . March . 08
I won!!!! WOOOHOO!
First up, this has been a totally awesome week… I got into work this morning and opened up my email and find out I got first place in the kids category of the Wedding Photojournalist Association!!! The photo was taken at Amy and Craig’s wedding in December. The shot is of Amy’s little sister looking at Amy’s ring. It was a totally beautiful moment. The Wedding Photojournalist Association is a international association promoting photojournalism at weddings.. many of the worlds best photographers are members and enter these competitions. It is a complete honour to get a placing, yet alone first place! I now get to have a blue medallion next to my name on the WPJA website and score an awesome camera bag =)
and on Wednesday night, I went to the Bridal Options magazine launch at the Bluewater Grill. They had a raffle going on the night and managed to win the grand prize, a beautiful pearl necklace set in white gold and diamonds! Its really beautiful! Many thanks can go to Charles Edward Jewellers for donating the prize! I will post a photo next week along with some photos of the new bridal options magazine, I have a nice big advertisement in it this year, two feature weddings - Michaelia + Alwins wedding and Sharee + Mick’s wedding! Also I have a few photos scattered through the magazine, one from Mikala and Scott’s wedding, Catie and Lindsay’s and from Amy and Craig’s which is the image below of Amy’s sister =)

have a good weekend everyone!!
